Kansas City councilman Michael Brooks has announced his resignation, effective Jan. 2.
Brooks, who represents the city’s 5h District, faced allegations that he had choked an aide in his office — a claim he has denied.
A special prosecutor was expected to be appointed to consider possible charges in the case.

In a resignation letter released Wednesday afternoon, Brooks blamed the media circus surrounding him for causing problems for his colleagues and loved ones. He said his resignation was in everyone’s best interests.

Brooks said he wanted to use the holidays to complete some work projects and clear out his office.

A news conference was planned for 3 p.m. Wednesday to discuss the decision.
