Smartphone self-portraits are now so prevalent that Britain’s Oxford University Press has crowned “selfie,” the name the public has given them, as the word the year for 2013.

“Selfies” are especially popular with fans who want an arm’s length close-up of them standing cheek to cheek with their idols.
