SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — A man and a woman are presumed drowned after they were dragged away by a fast-moving, icy river in Sioux Falls as they tried to save a 6-year-old child.

Sioux Falls Fire Chief Jim Sideras says emergency crews searching the Big Sioux River at Falls Park changed their focus from rescue to recovery early Friday.

Sideras says the woman was swept away by the frothing water as she tried to save the boy Thursday evening. The man jumped in to help and also disappeared. The boy emerged a short time later.

Sideras says the woman is related to the boy but is not his mother. Authorities have not released their identities.

KELO-TV and KSFY-TV report the boy is with family and is fine.
