NEW YORK (AP) — Former New York City Mayor David Dinkins has been hospitalized with pneumonia.

Law partner and adviser Peter Johnson says the 86-year-old Dinkins was admitted Wednesday night after experiencing difficulty breathing. He says he spoke by telephone with the former mayor Thursday and he was sounding much better.

Dinkins was the first black mayor of the nation’s largest city. The Democrat served one term, from 1990 to 1993.

Johnson says Dinkins keeps a “breakneck schedule.” Dinkins is teaching at Columbia University and supporting various charities.

Johnson notes Dinkins hosted an event this week for Democratic mayoral nominee Bill de Blasio (dih BLAH’-zee-oh).

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly served under Dinkins and visited him Thursday. He describes Dinkins as “looking well.”
