I’m Keeping Score Newhouse Kansas City

By Carlos Nelson Sr., President of Cascade Media Group
Newhouse KC demonstrates meaningful service to survivors of domestic violence through shelter, support programs, and crisis intervention. According to its published reports, the organization serves more than 850 adults and children annually, answers over 15,000 hotline calls, provides more than 27,000 safe days and nights, and serves over 23,000 meals. The organization has also expanded its impact by increasing shelter capacity from 80 to 104 beds and growing the number of survivors served each year. Financially, Newhouse appears stable, reporting annual revenues exceeding $5 million, positive operating results, and growing net assets.

While these accomplishments deserve recognition, the public reporting focuses primarily on activities rather than long-term outcomes. It is difficult to find data showing how many survivors secure permanent housing, achieve economic stability, maintain long-term safety, or avoid returning to abusive situations after completing services. In addition, publicly available reports do not appear to provide outcome data broken down by race, ethnicity, neighborhood, ZIP code, income level, or disability status. Without this information, it is challenging to evaluate whether all populations—particularly Black survivors—are benefiting proportionately from the organization’s resources and services.

Overall, Newhouse KC has demonstrated organizational growth, financial strength, and significant service delivery. However, greater transparency regarding long-term results and demographic outcomes would strengthen public accountability. The next level of measurement should focus not only on how many people receive services, but on how many lives are permanently changed through stable housing, economic advancement, and lasting safety. Until that information is publicly available, part of the score remains incomplete.
