Interview With Kansas City Fourth District Councilman Eric Bunch

Eric Bunch represents the city’s fourth city council district which includes Downtown, the Historic Northeast, Country Club Plaza, and a bit of Clay County. He is serving his first term on the city council following a decade of work in community advocacy, neighborhood planning, and transportation policy.

It is Eric’s belief that transformation can only happen by building relationships with the community and elevating the collective understanding of policy, planning, and public space impact quality of life.

In 2017, Eric led the advocacy campaign that ended homeowner responsibility for sidewalks and secured $150 million for repair through community organizing and direct action. An urban planner, Eric has created actionable blueprints for multiple school districts in the region to make their school zones safer. Eric co-founded BikeWalkKC, which advocates for walkability and provides educational programming to 10,000 students across the region. He has managed millions in federal dollars and delivered projects to expand the reach of public transit. He served four years as Mayor Sly James’ appointee to the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee.

A non-profit professional, Eric continues to serve in a part-time capacity with BikeWalkkC as the Director of Strategic Initiatives. He advises the BikeWalkKC leadership team on strategic planning, program design, and fund development. He and his wife Kaitlyn live in Midtown KC with their six-year-old son, Liam, twin two-year-old daughters, Helen and Vivian, and rescue dog, Mally. They are fortunate to have their schools, jobs, and frequent public transportation within walking distance of their house.
