Interview with Marchel Alverson writer, journalist, marketer and communications expert for
approximately 25 years. Currently, she is the Vice President of Marketing and Communications for the
Urban League of Greater Kansas City. She is the author of three books – Painted on Souls, Savor the
Sweetness, Kissed by Madness, and the upcoming To Dance Under the Weeping Tree. She is a Thorpe
Menn Literary Excellence Award Nominee, a member of Women & Words, which is under Penguin
Random House, and the second-place winner of the AAMBC I am Creative grant. Marchel is also a
former substitute teacher. She served on the Board of Directors for Comprehensive Mental Health
Services in Greater Kansas City. Marchel is certified in Mental Health First Aid. She is a proud member of
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Marchel is also a part of the Kansas City Association of Black Journalists.
She obtained a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg,
Mo. Marchel earned a master’s degree in communication studies from the University of Missouri-Kansas
City.
