Representative Barbara Anne Washington, a Democrat, represents part of Jackson County (District 23) in the Missouri House of Representatives. She was first elected to the House of Representatives in a special election in November 2017 and was re-elected to office in 2018.
In addition to her legislative duties, Washington is a practicing attorney who also possesses an MBA.
Washington proudly fights for increased economic development in her district – including preserving the notable “18th & Vine” district, increased funding for education, and better opportunities for health care. Two of her primary passions are juvenile justice reform and mental health awareness. In her community, she regularly presents programs aimed to educate on small business development, minority mental health awareness, crime reduction, and environment preservation.
When she’s not fighting for her district, she volunteers with her beloved sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She also volunteers with her church, St. James United Methodist; the Metropolitan Community Colleges Board of Trustees, Urban Summit, Freedom. Inc.; the Kansas City Boys Choir/Kansas City Girls Choir; and the United Nations Association of Greater Kansas City.
Washington is a proud graduate of the University of Missouri – Columbia’s famed School of Journalism. She obtained her Master of Business Administration from Avila University and her Juris Doctorate from the University of Missouri – Kansas City.
Washington is a lifelong Kansas City, Missouri resident. She has one daughter and a new grandson, Knight, who is the apple of his grandmother’s eye
