Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio does not just offer a sharp contrast to the policies of predecessor Michael Bloomberg, he will run the nation’s largest city with a very different leadership style: a hands-on approach that draws upon two decades in Democratic politics, with significant input from his poet-activist wife. NEW YORK (AP) — A change in leadership style is coming to New York’s City Hall.

Bill de Blasio’s management methods were shaped in the political trenches alongside some of the nation’s most prominent Democrats and includes a tight-knit partnership with his activist wife.

That contrasts sharply from outgoing Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The business titan ran the city like a CEO and largely stayed above the fray, delegating the day-to-day operations to his senior staff.

De Blasio says he’ll be hands-on and will mostly hire from within government rather than the private sector.

His poet and activist wife Chirlane (SHER’-lane) McCray is expected to play a key if informal role in his administration.

The Democrat was elected last week and takes office Jan. 1.
