WORLD IMPACT SERIES EDITORIAL Agenda 21, By Carlos Nelson Sr. President & CEO, Cascade Media Group
The debate surrounding Agenda 21 extends far beyond discussions about environmental policy or sustainable development. While the document itself was adopted during the 1992 Rio Earth Summit as a framework addressing economic, environmental, and social development, the controversy surrounding Agenda 21 highlights a larger issue that affects communities everywhere: access to information, ownership of media, and the ability of people to make informed decisions about policies that may impact their future.
At Cascade Media Group, we believe the most important question is not whether someone agrees or disagrees with Agenda 21. The most important question is whether communities possess independent sources of information capable of examining public policy, asking difficult questions, challenging assumptions, and providing perspectives that are often missing from mainstream conversations. Every generation faces decisions involving government, business, technology, education, economic development, housing, and public policy. The communities best positioned for success are those that remain informed and engaged.
For Black communities, this reality is especially important. Historically, many decisions affecting Black neighborhoods, businesses, schools, and families have been made without meaningful representation in the rooms where those decisions were discussed. Too often, Black communities have had to rely on outside institutions to define their concerns, explain their challenges, and tell their stories. That is one of the reasons independent Black media remains essential today. If we do not own platforms capable of informing our communities, preserving our history, amplifying our voices, and investigating issues that matter to us, we risk allowing others to define our future.
Cascade Media Group was built to address that challenge. As a Black-owned digital media company, our mission is not simply to publish news. Our mission is to educate, inform, empower, preserve history, celebrate achievement, examine policy, support entrepreneurship, and shine a light on issues that affect Black communities both locally and globally. While other organizations may operate with substantial corporate funding or large governing boards, Cascade Media Group continues its work through determination, community relationships, and an unwavering commitment to independent journalism.
Today, Cascade Media Group serves as the foundation for a growing family of media and community organizations, including Cascade Sports, What’s Up Kansas City, What’s Up Wichita, The UR History Project, the Kansas City Business Association, and additional educational and community-focused initiatives. Together, these platforms provide coverage of news, sports, business, culture, community events, entrepreneurship, history, and public affairs while helping ensure that stories important to our communities are documented and shared.
The unfortunate reality is that many individuals understand the importance of supporting Black-owned restaurants, Black-owned businesses, Black-owned banks, and Black-owned community organizations, yet often overlook the importance of supporting Black-owned media. That omission can be costly. Media influences public opinion, public policy, economic development, investment decisions, and community awareness. Communities that fail to support independent media often discover that their concerns receive less attention, their achievements receive less recognition, and their perspectives become underrepresented in public discourse.
This is why support for independent Black media should not be viewed as optional. It should be viewed as an investment in community self-determination. Organizations such as the NAACP, Urban League, Freedom Inc., Urban Summit, churches, civic groups, educational institutions, business associations, and community development organizations all benefit when strong Black media outlets exist to inform, educate, connect, and amplify the voices of the people they serve.
The conversation surrounding Agenda 21 reminds us of a simple truth. Information is power. Those who control information often shape outcomes. For that reason alone, communities must ensure that independent media organizations remain healthy, sustainable, and capable of serving future generations. The future is digital.
The wave is the Internet. The question is whether we will build, support, and sustain institutions capable of carrying our voices into that future.
Cascade Media Group remains committed to that mission.
